Nemuro

Assynt 34, 1022 - mid-afternoon

The party is re-united in the village and enjoys the hospitality of Shimura. Language is a serious barrier of communication, despite Feriuhn extracting language information from one of the guards during their first encounter. They claim to be traders from far in the north. They learn that the village is called Nemuro, which roughly translates to 'Deep Water'.

Observations: Alot more men than women, at least in this village.

The party is offered lodging in a guest house at the northern edge of the village, near the lakeshore. After dinner, they talk trade with Shimura. He has mostly gems to trade for goods. He is especially impressed by the glasswork (pitcher and glasses), and also agrees to buy some tea and one or two spices (on approval of one of the women from the kitchen). Shimura seems very interested in Triella and Anna, and seems to be expecting Ban to offer them for trade. No offers are forthcoming, and the evening ends on cordial terms. The party retires to the guest house to discuss what they've learned.

A light is seen coming down the mountain, and Ban's spyglass reveals a giant figure carrying a massive lantern, escorted by a few dozen very dirty men. An hour later the giant and a mining crew from the village arrive, depositing several crates of raw gems and rock. Tegred takes up position under one of the nearby houses and watches the transaction. A fresh mining crew of Nith men pull some trade goods to the giant, including a considerable amount of food and a small box, which the giant opens to examine a few cut and polished gems.

The giant almost departs with the new crew, before he turns about, drawing a great breath through his nostrils. He asks Shimura if there are new people in the village. Shimura tells him that they are just passing through, but he insists on meeting the visitors. After a brief exchange, and a half-hearted effort on the part of the giant to open a direct trade dialog, the giant seems to accept that the visitors are just passing through. He tells Shimura that as long as all of the visitors are just passing through, then there will be no adjustment to their arrangement.

With that, the giant picks up the heaviest crate, packed to the top with fresh fruit from the nearby orchard, and leads the new mining crew westward back along the lake and up the mountain path.

The party returns to the guest house, and Anna and Triella make use of the local bathhouse to freshen up. The excursion is uneventful, and they soon return to join their comrades in a restful night's sleep.
