Session Date: April 2nd, 2005
Trailer 1: *Ahem* After an extended hiatus, I am happy to report that the Hebridonia drought is near it's end. Warm up the Fudge dice, because it's time for Hebridonia Session 18 - "Fee Fie Foe Fum - The Mountain Giant's Rhapsody!"
Trailer 2: As previously advertised, this coming Saturday, April 2nd shall be the next installment in the Hebridonia VI campaign, tenatively titled "Sleeping Giants'. I like the title because it works on alot of levels... you may have an appreciation for it by the end of the session....
Synopsis
Assynt 35, 1022 - early afternoon
The giant is upset that the human miners have fled after breaking into an underground chamber, The miners complain that the hole had wind rushing from it that was 'the breath of the dead'. According to the giant, the work-stoppage is a breach of their agreement, and he threatens to destroy the village unless things are set right.
Ban offers the party's services to investigate the mine situation. Shimura accepts the offer, but the giant demands some advance payment (of foods and trade goods) as a security deposit that the situation will be resolved properly and promptly. He also demands that Triella (who was revealed in the previous session to be a healer) come with him as further incentive for swift action.
Feiruhn speaks Nith and tells the giant he can't take her. Shimura's jaw drops to find that one of the foriegners actually speaks their language. The giant is surprised as well, but seems to take it in stride upon seeing Shimura's surprise. Feiruhn dismisses the language issue by saying he's a quick study of languages. Shimura has a quick conference with Ban and Feiruhn to find out what *else* they haven't told him. Feiruhn admits that they did not come by ship from the north, but rather through a gate in the middle of the drysophian collective. Shimura probes to find out if they have made a pact with the Drysophians, and is satisfied that there is no agreement currently in place. On the way back to speak with the giant, he tells them that they will speak more on the subject later!
Shimura tells the giant that the visitors will handle the investigation, and that Triella will *not* be going with the giant because she is an essential part of the evaluation team. The giant balks, but Shimura implies that the giant's demands are an insult to their honor, and Shimura and his adjutants partially draw their swords, showing their resolve. The giant reluctantly agrees to take half of what is due, and to forego any human collateral. The giant storms off with his partial payment, warning Shimura that he has little time to resolve the situation peacefully.
The party preps for a trip to the mine. Shimura sends them with a guide from one of the last mining parties, who takes them to the entrance of the mine and tells them to follow the passage all the way to the end.
The party enters the mine. Gurath immediately notes that the humans are lousy miners, with insufficient supports in place to hold up the tunnel. He concludes that whatever formed the gems in a straight line into the mountain must have also reinforced the tunnel to make it safe for such shoddy work. They safely reach the end of the tunnel, and wind is still blowing through a small hole made by the miners.
Gurath grabs a nearby pick and takes a few whacks at the rock around the hole. It opens up easily, and he can see a faint glow some distance into the dark chamber. Gurath works to enlarge the hole so that they can step through. As he works, the glow becomes perceptably brighter, and other points of light start to glow. By the time the hole is large enough, the chamber's dome shape is faintly illuminated by long strands of glowing Nilhen runescript written on dome's surface. On the floor of the dome is an 8-pointed star that points to the other glowing convergence points of the runescript, and the hole that they have created.
As the party enters and explores the dome, the brightness of the dome is slowly increasing. Triella goes to meditate in the center of the floors geometrical construct, and Feiruhn tries to stop her. Naruko intervenes with a drawn sword and tells Feiruhn to stay away from Triella. Anna joins Triella in meditation.
At one of the cardinal points, the vortices and whorls of the dome have become transparent, revealing an arched passage curving counter-clockwise and downward. Before they are able to explore further, the scene shifts and swims, and when it congeals, the party (sans Naruko) is on the deck of an elven airship!
